Opportunities across the entire value chain from Research to Deployment

India is well aware that to participate in this opportunity, timely enabling of the right ecosystem is essential for creating a large base of domestic manufacturing. It has introduced the long-awaited strategic partnership model that will allow partnerships with overseas companies to manufacture everything from submarines to fighter jets in India.
There is already some visible success on this front. Telangana’s capital city Hyderabad is home to the country’s first public aerospace and precision engineering special economic zone (SEZ). Telangana is targeting a share of 15-20% market share in the aerospace and defence sector in India.
The state has prepared a draft aerospace and defence policy, which will be finalised after taking inputs from the soon to be released Defence Procurement Policy of the Centre. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has recently awarded Telangana as the best State for its most progressive policy for the aerospace sector.
The Hyderabad advantage
Hyderabad has the right ecosystems of technology, research, partnerships, infrastructure and talent to nurture a vibrant Aerospace and Defence Industry. The State has identified aerospace and defence as a priority industry in its industrial policy and has two operational Aerospace Manufacturing Parks near Adibatla region, besides an aerospace park operated by GMR adjoining the international airport. The state is planning to set up a larger aerospace park in Eliminedu and create another aerospace cluster within the National Investments and manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) planned at Medak district.
- DRDO has proposed a Centre of Excellence for smart manufacturing in aerospace and defence sectors in and around the city. For this, they have planned invest INR 64,000 Crore by 2025 in Hyderabad.
- Leading International OEMs such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky, RUAG, Pilatus etc. haveselected Hyderabad for manufacturing aero structures, fuselages, components and spares through theirIndian JV partner Tata Advanced Systems Ltd.
- International aircraft engine manufacturers like Pratt and Whitney and CFM have selected Hyderabad to locate their engine training centres in India. Hyderabad is also the first state to have a MRO SEZ at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, promoted by GMR Group.
- Kalyani Rafael Advanced System (KRAS), a joint venture between Israel’s Rafael and Kalyani Strategic Systems, will produce the third generation Spike anti- tank guided missile (ATGM) for the Indian Army. The state of art facility is the biggest FDI in Defence valued at about $1billion.
- A majority of the components for Mars Orbiter Mission have been manufactured in Hyderabad.
- Hyderabad is considered as the missile center of India with several public sector defence labs and missile manufacturing facilities located here.
- The country’s first Defence incubators will come up in Hyderabad, and will be housed at T-Hub, which has already got recognition as one of the country’s major centres for nurturing start-ups and creative ideas. T-Works, a Government of Telangana’s initiative, acts as a prototyping centre for electronics, semiconductors and hardware manufacturers.
- Hyderabad is well aligned to participate in the Industry 4.0 wave.
- Discussions are going on for setting up of specialized Aerospace Schools/ Centre of Excellence (COE) in Hyderabad, to meet the growing demands of A&D industries in Hyderabad. The state government has signed a MoU with UK-based Cranfield University to create an aviation university in Hyderabad.
- About 1000 SMEs are exclusively working for Defence and Aerospace industry both for Indian and global industries in the state. They are mainly focusing in the areas of Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics, Avionic, Hydraulics, Composites, System Integration, GIS, Mapping, Communications, etc., and mainly into high precision operations.
- Hyderabad has a strong presence of Defence PSUs, scientific & technological institutes along with R&D agencies.It is recognized for IT/ITES, electronics, hardware, bio & Nano-tech industries, which contributes to the supply chain of the sector.
- Hyderabad is a seismically safe city as it falls under seismic zone-1.
- The State has 26 Universities, 705 Engineering Colleges 280 polytechnics producing employable technically trained workforce. Several prestigious institutions’ such as the IIT, ISB, CCMB, IICT, IIIT etc are located in Hyderabad which creates a vibrant atmosphere promoting innovation, cross functional research and technology collaboration.
